A Sign of the Times... Ho-Chunk Village Update
Things have really been on the move this summer in the Ho-Chunk Village. New duplexes, houses, townhouses, a playground, two wind generators, plans moving forward for the opening of the new restaurant, and there’s a new sign to mark the entrance to the village.
The new duplexes in Ho-Chunk Village have now been completed and they have been rented to tribal members.
Also nearing completion in the Village is the first of two new homes being built by HCI. The homes are built by Dynamic Homes, a Ho-Chunk company. After being delivered to the Village, the first house was buttoned up and completed on site by HCI Construction. The final finishing touches on the house were being completed late last week. The home, located at 504 Hawk Street, just west of the new duplexes is now ready for sale to local tribal members.
The second new home is scheduled to be delivered and set on its foundation in the near future. It will also be ready for sale to local tribal members. Once it is set, buttoned up and finishing completed on the interior it will be ready for occupancy. Persons interested in more information on financing the purchase of either of the homes can contact Joi Long at HCI.
Four new townhouses are also in the works for the Ho-Chunk Village in the near future. Plans call for the townhouses to be completed and ready to be occupied, sometime this winter. They will be located just to the south of the new duplexes in the Village.
Also on its way to the Ho-Chunk Village is a new playground. The site for the new playground is currently being worked on as well as securing the funding for the project.
Two new wind generators have also recently gone up just to the west of the new apartments in the Ho-Chunk Village.
All of the paperwork required by the USDA for the completion of the new restaurant in the Village Place building has been submitted for approval, which is expected to come in the next two weeks. Once approved the remaining equipment and inventory will be purchased and tested. The hoped for opening day for the restaurant is October 1st, but no later than November 1st.
Travelers along the highway through Winnebago are now being greeted by a beautiful new stone and metal sign marking the entrance to the Ho-Chunk Village. The two-sided stone and metal sign which is 18 feet tall and 10 feet wide was designed by Blue Earth Marketing. The steel structure and stone work on the sign was built by HCI Construction and installation was completed last week.

The Little Priest Apartments also continue to show progress in the Ho-Chunk Village. The new complex featuring two buildings each holding 10 2 and 3 bedroom apartment units will provide high quality, living quarters with affordable rent for low-income families and senior citizens.
Work is currently underway on completing the exterior areas of the apartment buildings. The first building is scheduled for completion in December 2008, while the second building should be finished before June 2009. The apartment units were designed and constructed by Dynamic Homes and are being finished on site by HCI Construction, both HCI subsidiaries.
The Little Priest Apartments are a joint venture between Ho-Chunk Community Development Corporation and the Midwest Housing Equity Group, Inc.
