June 14th, the U.S. Army’s birthday, we honor the legacy of SFC John R. Rice, a proud Winnebago tribal member and U.S. Army veteran whose story reflects both the courage and resilience of Native service members.

After serving in World War II and again in Korea, earning the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, John was denied burial in a private cemetery because he was Native American. The injustice sparked national outrage, prompting President Truman to ensure he was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

This week members of our team, including one of our summer interns Kelsi DeCora, a fellow Winnebago tribal member visited his gravesite to honor his memory and reflect on the strength and dignity of Native service members, past and present.
